Allie came in wanting to discuss options. She found out she was pregnant, and the father of the baby was not supportive. She lost her mother to cancer a few years ago and did not have a good relationship with her siblings. She felt alone, isolated, and unable to care for a child. She said she does not want to consider abortion but in her current situation there was no way she could bring a child into this. I gave her some information to take home and look over and asked her to come back for an ultrasound.
During her ultrasound visit we were able to see and hear the heartbeat. After seeing the ultrasound, she was still very undecided. We talked about her faith in God, and she told me she had been praying that God would give her a sign. Gently, I asked her to consider that maybe God had already given her a sign.
She broke down crying and began to tell me she agreed but the reality is she is living in a home with no running water. How could she bring a baby home to that? She had been buying gallons of water at the store just to try to keep herself clean. She was embarrassed and downtrodden and did not want anyone to know she was living this way. She shared that months ago her pipes under her home had burst along with her hot water heater and she could not afford the repairs. I prayed with her and let her know that if we found any resources that could help her, we would let her know. As soon as she left, the nurse and the advocate began to work on getting her some help. The nurse had a connection to a plumber who agreed to evaluate the damage and cost of the repair. The plumber ended up fixing her pipes, the hot water heater, and even her toilet that was broken. The plumber refused any payment in return. The next week we received this message from her:
“I am glad for not just the fixing of my water, but our conversation has really changed and helped me with my next steps and I’m so happy we met. I spoke with my family about it, and they are willing to take the baby if I can’t handle it. You’re a God send, and I can’t say thank you enough.”
